Audra H., Nursing Student

“Putting myself in a position to help people makes me feel like I have purpose.”

For Audra, the journey to becoming a nurse began in an unexpected place—the stage. A student at UCLA’s nursing program and a dedicated actor, Audra is no stranger to navigating roles that demand empathy, connection and presence. But beyond the theater lights, she’s discovering a new role: that of a future nurse, guided by purpose and inspired by selflessness.

Audra’s passion for nursing is clear, though she occasionally grapples with imposter syndrome. Often mistaken for a fully licensed nurse, she’s quick to clarify: she's still in training, still learning. Yet the passion she speaks with is unmistakably that of someone born to serve and care.

I'm going to have very hard moments. I know that. I think it's important to remember why you're there and how important your role is. You need to find your purpose and just keep pushing through.”

She embraces the challenge ahead with humility, knowing full well the road to becoming a nurse is lined with emotional trials and relentless responsibilities.

What drives Audra is the simple yet profound desire to help others. Nursing, she believes, isn’t just a profession; it’s a calling steeped in empathy and anchored in service. It’s also an emotional commitment, one that she doesn’t take lightly.

She reveres the role of nurses for the multifaceted strength it demands: being present in someone’s darkest hour, providing care with calm and confidence and doing it all while holding fast to a sense of purpose.

As an actor, Audra has spent years inhabiting other people’s stories, stepping into characters’ shoes and learning to feel their joys and struggles. That training, she explains, is unexpectedly valuable in nursing.

“As an actor, you're empathetic. You feel, and you are put into different situations, and you care about people and their circumstances, and that's what nurses do, too.”

For her, the overlap between acting and nursing is not just metaphorical, it’s foundational. Both demand an acute awareness of human emotion, a sensitivity to individual circumstances and the ability to form a deep connection, often without words.

Audra’s story is one of alignment—of passions colliding in a way that enriches both. Through the lens of performing, she found empathy; through nursing, she found purpose. In both, she sees herself not as a hero, but as a human willing to show up, heart first, for those who need her most.
